Delegates from more than 20 counties have gathered in the Canadian city of Montreal, focusing talks on how to handle reconstruction in Haiti following the devastating earthquake that rocked the country on January 12.
As many as 200,000 people died and more than 1.5 million were left homeless when the 7.0-magnitude earthquake destroyed much of Port-au-Prince. With no real building codes in place the majority of the structures inside the city collapsed, leaving several thousands of people buried beneath debris.
After a ten-day search and rescue effort the Haitian government announced they would be moving toward recovery. That recovery will be the focus of talks in Montreal where Haitian Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive will be discussing his countries needs with delegates from the UN, World Food Bank along with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Canadian Foreign Minister Lawrence Cannon.
While reconstruction will be discussed it is believed the talks will also review the current distribution of aid to Haiti and outline more effective means of delivering food and supplies to the people. According to Cannon that will mean getting the county’s government “back on its feet.” Several of Haiti’s key government buildings were destroyed in the quake, leaving officials with no offices from which to run the country.
