Controversial documentary filmmaker Michael Moore may have crossed the line this time. Well, at least 90 miles across the line. Moore, the Academy Award-winning producer and director of “Bowling for Columbine,” is now being investigated by the U.S. Treasury Department for a recent trip to Cuba.
According to a letter sent to Moore by the Treasury Department’s Office of Assets Control the 53-year-old filmmaker is being investigated for violating the U.S. traded embargo that restricts travel to the communist island.
Moore’s trip to Cuba was used as part of his upcoming film documentary “Sicko” in which he examines the U.S. health-care industry. As part of the trip, Moore carried a number of sick rescue workers who were at Ground Zero after the Sept. 11 attacks to Cuba for treatment.
While Moore had applied for permission as a full-time journalist to travel to Cuba permission had never been granted.
“Sicko” is slated to premier at the Cannes Film Festival on May 19 with its debut in theaters tentatively scheduled for June.
