‘American Idol’ Drops LaKisha Jones, Final Three Set

After beginning her ‘American Idol’ quest as an almost sure-fire bet to make the finals, LaKisha Jones march ended abruptly on Wednesday as the 27-year-old Maryland native was voted off the Fox reality show.

When Ryan Seacrest announced that Jordin Sparks was safe and a short while later that Melinda Doolittle had made it to the next round it became apparent that Jones was in deep trouble. Paired with Blake Lewis in the bottom two, Jones had little chance of overcoming the fan base of the last remaining guy in the competition.

Seacrest then revealed that Blake was safe and Jones was going home.

Jones had enjoyed early success in the competition and was considered on par with Melinda Doolittle as a frontrunner but a few bad weeks and the emergence of Sparks as a serious contender bumped her from her once favored position.

Despite the exit from ‘American Idol’ LaKisha could find herself in the same situation as past ‘Idol’ castoffs that have made it big. Both Jennifer Hudson and Chris Daughtry have enjoyed greater success as early exits compared to eventual winners Fantasia Barrino and Taylor Hicks. Jones has already proven that she can sing her style of music and that could mean she won’t be idle for long.

As for the remaining three, Melinda, Jordin and Blake, early bets have the beat-boxing Lewis departing next week. It would be a relief and a credit to the voters if that actually occurred. Based on vocals Lewis probably wouldn’t have made it into the top ten but his willingness to take risks and his unique style have saved him thus far. Don’t count on it lasting another week.
