British Prime Minister Tony Blair has announced his intentions to resign on June 27 after serving in his position for ten years.
Despite leading the British economy into a period of tremendous growth and holding office while peace in Northern Ireland was established Blair’s popularity has sunk due to his commitment to providing British troops to Iraq.
After September 11, 2001 Blair vowed to stand side by side with the U.S. in fighting terrorism and when the American troops entered Iraq, British troops soon followed. Since that time Blair has been heavily criticized by his Labour Party members and anti-war groups throughout the UK.
Speaking before his supporters at Trimdon Labour Club in northern England Blair said “Hand on heart, I did what I thought was right, I may have been wrong, but that's your call. But believe one thing if nothing else. I did what I thought was right for our country.”
