Marin Cilic has reached new heights in his Grand Slam career, advancing to his first semifinals after winning a grueling five set battle with Andy Roddick 7-6 (7-4), 6-3, 3-6, 2-6, 6-3 in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open.
Cilic looked like he would make quick work of Roddick, taking the first two sets in easy fashion. Roddick appeared to have a shoulder injury and it was unclear if he would continue after falling behind by two sets but he battled through the next two sets to even the match. Roddick looked like he might grab control of that fifth set as he had a triple break point but Cilic fought back and took the game and the American looked beat.
Cilic had never been past the quarterfinals in any Grand Slam prior to this year’s Australian Open. He reached the quarterfinals of the 2009 U.S. Open before losing to Juan Martin Del Potro. Cilic has reached the fourth round of the French Open and Wimbledon.
