Avalon, California – May 11, Vacation homeowners on Catalina Island have reported that a major blaze is encroaching upon Catalina Island property and towns.
The wildfire forced many residents and property owners to evacuate by ferry, while firefighters worked to keep business and property safe. Fire Chief Steven Hoefs said that evacuation orders are in effect for 1200 homes but that “most the structures have been protected.”
The fire broke late in the day on Thursday, feeding on dry bush and fanned by strong winds. The inhabitants had to flee by ferry from the quaint 1929 town of Avalon. According to the Catalina Island Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau the town of Avalon is home to only 3200 residents but attracts more than 10,000 on weekends and in summer months. The tiny Island has only gotten two inches of rain in 2007 and is just as susceptible to wildfires other California properties.
The winds died down Thursday night as Marine Corp hovercraft moved in to battle the blaze. Only 175 homes and businesses lost power on Thursday. The vast majority of Catalina vacation homes and rentals have been left unharmed.
