Australian Open 2010 Quarterfinals Results: Andy Murray Marches into Semifinals after Rafael Nadal Retires in Third Set

Andy Murray took another step toward his first career Grand Slam singles title, forcing Rafael Nadal to retire in the third set of their quarterfinals showdown in the Australian Open. Murray was ahead 6-3, 7-6 (7-2), 3-0 when Nadal, hampered by a knee injury, signaled he couldn’t go any further.

Murray continued to display the same dominant form that has quickly made him a favorite to win the Australian Open as he hammered out 13 aces and won points on 77% of his first serves put in play. He was also able to come up with big points when he needed them most as Nadal was able to capitalize on just two of 12 break point opportunities.

Murray has yet to capture a Grand Slam singles title yet he reached the finals at the 2008 U.S. Open where he fell to Roger Federer. He reached the semifinals of Wimbledon last year before being dismissed by Andy Roddick and he reached the quarterfinals of the 2009 French Open where he lost to Fernando Gonzalez. His best finish at the Australian Open prior to 2010 had been a fourth round appearance.
