Former Sudanese Prime Minister Sadiq al-Mahdi has announced his plans to stand in the country’s upcoming presidential election, presenting a legitimate challenge to the current presidency of Omar al-Bashir.
Mahdi was elected as prime minister in 1986 after and served as the head of the country’s government until a 1989 coup led by Bashir. Shortly after the coup Bashir eliminated the post of Prime Minister of Sudan.
Mahdi addressed the coup when making his announcement to challenge Bashir, saying “I have not been fired by the people, I have been fired by the guns. Now it is possible for the people to reinstate whom they believe represents their interest, represents aspirations.”
Prior to Mahdi’s announcement Bashir was expected to go largely unchallenged in the April election. While Bashir is still seen as a clear favorite in the election Mahdi’s participation is seen as a victory in the process.
