Guatemalan Authorities Arrest Former President Alfonso Portillo

Guatemalan authorities have arrested former President Alfonso Portillo during a raid on a ranch in the north of the country.

Portillo, who is wanted in the United States on money-laundering charges, has been accused by Guatemalan authorities of being involved in the disappearance of $15 million that had been designated for the country’s defense department.

Portillo took office in 2000 and after his term ended in 2004 he fled to Mexico but was forced to return to answer corruption charges in 2008. Last Friday a Guatemalan court approved a U.S. extradition request that tied Portillo to a laundering scheme involving money stolen from a children’s charity.
