Li Na looked all but done midway through the second set, having already dropped her first set but she dug deep and battled her way to a stunning three set 2-6, 7-6 (7-4), 7-5 win over Venus Williams to reach the semifinals at the Australian Open.
Li Na was able to take advantage of a poor service game from Venus Williams as the American committed 11 double faults and had her serve broken eight times. Li Na wasn’t much better with her serve as Venus broke her nine times but in the end there were too many points left on the court for the American.
Prior to this year Li Na’s deepest run at a Grand Slam singles event was a quarterfinals appearance at the 2006 Wimbledon and the 2009 U.S. Open, losing both times to Kim Clijsters. Her best finish at the French Open was a fourth round appearance.
