Famous Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty wants to fight the obscenity charges that were leveled against her after American actor Richard Gere kissed the 31-year-old during an AIDS awareness event in New Delhi last month.
Gere, 57, set off protests and intense anger in several areas of India for grabbing Shetty at the event and kissing her several times on the cheek. A judge determined the act to be a violation of the public obscenity laws and issued an arrest warrant for Gere who had already left the country.
Many lawyers in India were outraged with the judge for issuing the arrest warrant and said that the act made their country look ridiculous in the eyes of the world. Shortly after the arrest warrant was issued the judge was transferred to another city, yet the charges remain.
Shetty has petitioned the Supreme Court to move the case from Jaipur to Mumbai where she currently lives so that she may better fight the charges. A ruling from the Supreme Court will be made on Tuesday.
