President Mahinda Rajapaksa has been declared the winner of the recent presidential election in Sri Lanka but the results are being challenged by opposition leader Gen. Sarath Fonseka.
According to the Elections Commission the results were clearly in favor of Rajapaksa as he secured 57.8% of the vote while Fonseka was at 40%. In challenging the results Fonseka has accused Rajapaksa of misusing state resources for his campaign, including state-run television which was used to provide constant coverage of the president’s message.
Fonseka also alleged that accessibility to the polls for internally displaced Sri Lankan Tamils was limited. That allegation was supported by figures that showed 70% of Sri Lankans eligible to vote cast a ballot but the turnout in the Tamil areas in the northeast of the country was below 30%.
Despite several independent monitoring groups backing Fonseka’s complaints it is unlikely the Elections Commission will throw out the results because the disparity in votes was so significant.
