Zimbabwe High Court Backs Land-Reform Program of Robert Mugabe

Zimbabwe’s High Court has backed the controversial land-reform program of President Robert Mugabe, ruling against a regional court’s decision that stated farmers should be allowed to return to their farms without conflict.

That decision, made by the Southern African Development Community in 2008, had already been rejected by Mugabe but on Wednesday he received the backing of his country’s High Court which said enforcing the SADC’s ruling “would be fundamentally contrary to the public policy of this country.”

That public policy, instituted by Mugabe, has concentrated on seizing the land of white farmers and redistributing the land to black farmers. Many have pointed to this policy as a reason for Zimbabwe’s economic collapse yet Mugabe has shown no sign of reversing his decision.
