Porfirio Lobo Sworn In as New President of Honduras

Nearly two months after winning Honduras’ presidential election Porfirio Lobo has been sworn in as the country’s new leader and will now face the difficult task of restoring a sense of political normalcy following months of uncertainty.

Lobo replaces ousted President Manuel Zelaya who remains holed up in the Brazilian embassy in Tegucigalpa. Zelaya was forced from office last June after attempting to organize a vote to determine if a constituent assembly should be put in place to possibly rewrite the country’s constitution.

Zelaya was accused of attempting to eliminate the country’s one-term limit on the presidential office, an accusation he has denied. His removal from office caused an international outcry as several countries demanded he be returned to power but the Honduran Supreme Court ruled his ousting legal and the interim government refused to bend.

After spending several months in exile Zelaya snuck back into Honduras in September and took refuge in the Brazilian embassy. Soldiers quickly surrounded the building and the government threatened to arrest Zelaya under the charge of treason.

That all appears to be cleared with the election of Lobo who has pledged to provide Zelaya with safe passage from the country. Lobo has made it clear that he would like to restore international ties with those countries who have refused to recognize November’s election and allowing Zelaya to leave will eb the first step in that happening.
