Afghan Forces to Take Control of Security in Some Provinces by End of Year

Afghan forces are expected to take control of security in a number of provinces by the end of the year according to a one-day conference in London that outlined the country’s future.

The conference concentrated on curbing the influence of the Taliban and methods of encouraging militants to renounce violence and engage in peace talks. A key component of that plan revolves around a reintegration plan that involves a pledge of $140 million from world leaders to flip low-level Taliban fighters.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai addressed the need to attract those Taliban fighters stating, “We must reach out to all of our countrymen, especially our disenchanted brothers, who are not part of al-Qaeda, or other terrorist networks, who accept the Afghan constitution.”

Karzai has expressed optimism about his country’s ability to take over security operations in several provinces and stressed the responsibility of protecting Afghan citizens should eventually be on the government and its forces.
