Microsoft announced that earnings in the last quarter of 2009 leapt 60 percent, due largely to more people purchasing personal computers.
The larger part of 2009 was a difficult year for PC companies but the holidays helped bolster otherwise dire sales. Detaching the company's earnings from the sales of pricy computers is difficult, considering the two most lucrative sectors for Microsoft remain their operating systems and Microsoft Office.
The company announced Thursday that its net income for the fiscal second quarter that came to a close on December 31 reached $6.7 billion. Revenue was also on the raise, gaining 13 percent to $19 billion.
The improvements were also encouraged by the introduction of Windows 7, which hit the market during this quarter.
