State of Emergency Declared in Bolivia as Heavy Rains Lead to Massive Flooding

Bolivia’s President Evo Morales has declared a state of emergency in several areas of his country after several days of heavy rains have caused massive flooding and mudslides, affecting several thousands of people in the capital La Paz as well as Santa Cruz, Cochabamba, Chuquisaca and Beni.

The heavy rains and mudslides have destroyed crops and knocked out communication lines while causing a number of transportation problems as roads have been blocked or washed away.

Morales toured the hit areas and authorized the release of emergency funds but with forecasters predicting more rain in the coming days the situation could get worse.
