Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland Microsoft founder Bill Gates announced that he, along with his wife Melinda, would be donating $10 billion over the next ten years to develop new vaccines to immunize children in developing countries.
Established as the William H. Gates Foundation in the 1994, the Gates Foundation (renamed in 1999 as the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation), has already committed nearly $5 billion over the past ten years to developing vaccines.
In announcing the latest pledge Bill Gates stated “We must make this the decade of vaccines,” and added “Vaccines already save and improve millions of lives in developing countries. Innovation will make it possible to save more children than ever before.”
After hearing the news of the Gates Foundation pledge Margaret Chan, head of the World Health Organization, called the act unprecedented and stated “additional two million deaths in children under five years could be prevented by 2015 through widespread use of new vaccines and a 10% increase in global vaccination coverage.”
