A Kansas jury needed just 37 minutes to find Scott Roeder guilty of first-degree murder in the shooting death of George Tiller, one of the few doctors in the state that provided late-term abortions.
Roeder’s lawyers argued that the act of killing Tiller had been carried out to prevent a greater harm, the doctor’s continued performance of abortions. While Roeder pled not guilty to first-degree murder, insisting on a lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter as a means of saving unborn babies, the judge in the case dismissed that charge because abortion is legal in Kansas.
Last May Roeder entered the Kansas church that Tiller attended and gunned down the 67-year-old during a service.
With the guilty verdict Roeder is facing life in jail with the possibility of parole after 25 years.
