The inspirational story of Anthony Hargrove's journey from treatment for addiction in a drug rehab to the Super Bowl
CONNECTICUT- The road to the Super Bowl hasn’t been an easy one for New Orleans Saints defensive tackle, Anthony Hargrove. A rough start in childhood and the loss of his mother at an early age were just a few of the obstacles he had to overcome.
Finding his way through football, he began to make a name for himself only to be sidelined by drug abuse. Only after a stern intervention from a recruiter, did Hargrove decide it was time to come clean- to everyone. For years Hargrove, just like many other drug and alcohol dependent individuals tried to ignore his problem and keep it a secret from others. He soon discovered that it was impossible to do so. He entered into a drug rehab center and got clean.
“That’s what drugs and alcohol do to you: deceive you into thinking so many different things. Things like ‘no one knows I’m using’, ‘no one can really tell I’m high/drunk’, ‘a little bit doesn’t do any harm’”, a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center says. “The fact is, those are all lies- lies that keep an individual bound to their drug of choice. No drug or alcohol abuser can ever keep their addiction a secret for an extended period of time. Sure, they may be able to cover it for awhile, but eventually their lives and the lives of their loved ones become materially affected. And the lucky ones—the smart ones—finally have a breakthrough, like Mr. Hargrove did—and get the help they need.”
