With “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End” due out in less than two weeks the flood of marketing gimmicks and merchandising surrounding the wildly popular ‘Pirates’ franchise is set to take over. But don’t count toothpaste as a product that Jack Sparrow will endorse.
According to the Daily Express Johnny Depp told movie executives that the idea of pitching oral hygiene “just seemed wrong” and apparently they backed off the plan.
Depp told the paper “How can a guy with gold teeth sell toothpaste? It’s like a bald man selling shampoo.”
Adding to the list that goes against the pirates code, hot dogs, as Depp quipped “cold cuts would be weird… Captain Jack hot dogs?”
No doubt there will be plenty of other marketable items for Depp, Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom to endorse but Keith Richards may have a harder time. Perhaps he may become the new face of an anti-aging cream campaign but don’t count on it.
“Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End” opens May 23 and is expected to give Spider-Man 3 a run for both opening day records and opening weekend records at the box-office.
