Jason Kidd scored 20 points, grabbed 9 rebounds and dealt out 6 assists, Vince Carter added 12 points and 10 assists and Richard Jefferson finished with 15 points and 8 boards as the New Jersey Nets managed to beat the Cleveland Cavaliers 83-72 in game five of their playoff series to pull to within one game of evening the match-up.
Remarkably, New Jersey hit just one field goal in the fourth quarter and scored a total of six points in the final period yet managed to beat the Cavaliers by double-figures. The Nets entered the final period with a 77-59 lead and didn’t score from the floor until Vince Carter hit a jumper with 4:05 left in the game.
Fortunately for the Nets the Cavaliers were equally as bad from the floor as LeBron James netted the first Cleveland bucket with 5:09 remaining on the clock. After LeBron scored Larry Hughes hit a three-pointer to pull the Cavs to within nine but then Carter hit his jumper and Cleveland could only add two more points to their total.
Cleveland was down by four late in the second quarter but the Net closed the first half with an eight point lead and opened the third quarter with a 12-2 run that the Cavaliers could never recover from.
Both LeBron James and Larry Hughes struggled from the floor, combining to hit just 8-31 from the floor for 27 points.
The series will now shift back to New Jersey where the two teams will meet on Friday in game six of their best of seven series.
