“I want to see my girl Melinda in the final,” that’s what Simon Cowell told Ryan Seacrest when pressed about who he would like to see in the ‘American Idol’ finals. On Wednesday night Cowell’s hopes were dashed as Melinda Doolittle was dropped for the show in favor of Jordin Sparks and Blake Lewis.
Cowell had long favored the talents of Doolittle, complimenting the 29-year-old by saying, “if I’m going to award a place in the final to the person who has consistently delivered week after week it’s you.”
Doolittle was done in due large part to her questionable fit as an ‘American Idol.’ There was no doubt that Melinda carried the pipes but the marketability of the Tennessee native caused some to second guess her chances.
Had this been a previous season Melinda may well have gone on to win the competition but following Taylor Hicks’ unremarkable career despite an ‘American Idol’ title fans don’t seem to be willing to invest their votes in just a great voice. Fans want more than just a big voice, they want personality and entertainment, they want Jordin Sparks and Blake Lewis.
So now Simon is forced to sit back and watch as both Sparks and Lewis battle it out for the ‘Idol’ crown. It will be interesting to see if Cowell exhibits any disgust or makes any comments after a sub-par performance about why Doolittle belonged in the finals.
