Andy Warhol Painting Sells for $71.7 Million at Auction
When it was first listed as part of the auction, Christie’s auction house estimated that it would pull in a record price of $25-$35 million. While they were right that it would be a record price they grossly underestimated the value as Andy Warhol’s 1963 silk print “Green Car Crash (Green Burning Car)” fetched $71.7 million on Wednesday.
The astronomical price far surpassed the previous record for a Warhol piece, a $17.4 million tag for his famous “Mao” that was purchased in November at a Christie’s auction.
“Green Car Crash” is part of a series of paintings Warhol completed that were inspired by photographs of actual car accidents that resulted in fatalities.
