Roger Federer showed no sympathy for Great Britain, extending the 74 year drought since a men’s Grand Slam singles title after knocking off Andy Murray 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (13-11) to capture the Australian Open singles title.
Federer played composed throughout the match, showing little emotion throughout until he threw his hands up after braking Murray’s serve in the 24th game of the third set tie-breaker. Federer looked like he would walk through the Finals after a routine opening two sets but Murray started to find his range in the third. Unfortunately for Murray he couldn’t grab points at the critical moment and Federer pounced on the opportunities.
Federer has now won the Australian Open four times. The Swiss star also owns a career Grand Slam having won his first French Open title last year to go along with his five U.S. Open titles and six Wimbledon titles. Federer’s 16 Grand Slam singles titles are most of any male player.
