The highly anticipated arrival of Apple’s iPhone received a boost from the Federal Communications Commission on Thursday when it approved the phone/music player for retail sale.
Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) CEO Steve Jobs had announced in January his company’s plans for the phone and since that time a steady buzz has surrounded the possible features that will be included on the mobile device.
While the FCC documents revealed Bluetooth capabilities as well as Wi-Fi, and confirmed that it was a GSM phone, the rest remains a mystery.
Apple has requested the FCC not release photos of the phone or the user’s manual for 45 days after the certification was granted. Also shrouded in mystery will be the technology behind the inner-workings of the phone.
iPhone will initially be sold exclusively through AT&T with a price tag of $499 for the 4G-byte and $599 for the 8G-byte. It should be on shelves by late June.
