Roger Clemens began his trek back to the New York Yankees with four innings on the hill in Class-A Tampa on Friday giving up three hits, including a homerun, in 58 pitches.
The 44-year old Clemens signed a one-year deal with the Yankees worth just over $28 million earlier this month.
Clemens, a seven-time Cy Young Award winner, is expected to pitch for the Yankees Double-A club on Wednesday and after that it could be on to New York. When asked about the possibility of Clemens joining the club after Wednesday’s start Yankees manager Joe Torre said “That's a possibility.”
Fans in New York know that it’s almost a necessity as their Yankees already trail the Boston Red Sox by ten games in the American League East.
In 22 years Clemens has compiled a 348-178 record and recorded 4,604 strikeouts. His win total is good enough for eighth on the all-time list while he trails only Nolan Ryan in strikeouts.
Both of Clemens’ World Series rings came while he was wearing a Yankees uniform.
