James Frey’s “A Million Little Pieces” Could Cost Him A Few Million Dollars

James Frey detailed his life of addiction and recovery in his memoir “A Million Little Pieces” and the book quickly grabbed best-seller status as readers grabbed up copies and poured through the tragic tails and inspiring hope laid out in the pages. The only problem was that large portions of the “memoir” were fabrications and now the “million little lies” could cost Frey and publisher Random House Inc. $2.35 million in refunds.

The success of Frey’s book skyrocketed when Oprah Winfrey selected it for her book club in the fall of 2005. A few months later it was revealed that most of the stories that were past off as actual events in Frey’s life never took place and readers began filing lawsuits against the author and publisher.

Those lawsuits were consolidated and brought forth in front of U.S. District Judge Richard J. Howell who has tentatively agreed to provide readers who purchased the book before Jan, 26, 2006 the option of a refund. That date marked the day Frey and Random House acknowledged that parts of the book were fabricated.

The agreement would order Frey and Random House to spend $2.35 million to fully refund readers the price of the book.

While claims would have to be filed by Oct.1, Howell has set Nov.2 as the date in which he will consider final approval for the deal.
