UN Begins Large-Scale Food Distribution Programs in Haiti

The United Nations has begun a large-scale distribution of food to the victims of Haiti’s devastating earthquake, setting up 16 centers in the capital of Port-au-Prince where women will be able to collect aid for their families.

As part of the distribution program the UN’s World Food Program will enable women to exchange vouchers for sacks of rice. Only women will be allowed to collect aid as the WPF has determined this to be the best way of ensuring those who need food the most actually receive it.

With the new program in place the WFP is hoping to feed as many as two million people still struggling to recover from the 7.0-magnitude earthquake that destroyed most of the city three weeks ago. The food distribution program is expected to extend for several months as relief aid continues to pour into the country and recovery efforts continue.

While there has been a massive international push for food and medical relief to Haiti the distribution of that aid has been difficult as much of the city’s infrastructure remains in ruins. Doctors providing care in the city have warned that the inability to distribute medical supplies would lead to more deaths. Government officials have estimated as many as 200,000 people died in the quake.
