Yemeni authorities have rejected a ceasefire offer by northern rebels belonging to the minority Shia Zaidi sect in the northwestern Sadda district, stating the proposal would have to include an end to attacks on Saudi Arabia.
Yemen had outlined several conditions for a ceasefire with Houthi rebels and while leader Abdul-Malik al-Houthi agreed to five of the conditions including the reopening of roads in the north and the release of military and civilian prisoners he did not recognize a sixth stipulation, the end to cross-border violence with Saudi forces.
In an audio message Houthi ignored that sixth condition stating, “In order to avoid... the annihilation of civilians we reiterate our acceptance of the five points.”
Failing to agree to that sixth condition led the Yemeni government to reject any ceasefire and a spokesman for the ruling party addressed the issue saying, “This is a key demand we cannot make concessions on.”
