“Shrek the Third” Opens with $39 Million

The long awaited arrival of “Shrek the Third” to theaters brought in an impressive $39 million at the box office on its opening day but its chase for the highest grossing opening weekend for an animated movie is up in the air.

Starring Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, Eddie Murphy, Antonio Banderas, and Justin Timberlake, “Shrek the Third” is chasing the $108 million “Shrek 2” grabbed during opening weekend in 2004.

While “Shrek the Third” surpassed the web-spinning of Spider-Man 3, next week won’t be so easy as Johnny Depp, Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom return in “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End.”
