Tim Duncan scored 27 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, Manu Ginobili had 23 points and 10 assists and Tony Parker finished with 21 points and 6 assists as the San Antonio Spurs beat the Utah Jazz 108-100 in their opening game of the Western Conference finals.
San Antonio led 23-20 after the first quarter and then turned it up in the second period to put Utah in a hole they could never climb out of. The Spurs started the quarter with an 8-2 spurt and then used a 9-2 run late in the half to build a 19 point lead. Tim Duncan led the Spurs with 14 points in the deciding period.
The Spurs maintained a double-digit lead throughout the third quarter as every run the Jazz tried to put together was answered by San Antonio.
Utah trailed by as many as 18 early in the fourth but they managed to chip away at the lead and Deron Williams got them to within nine when he completed a three-point play with 3:50 left in the game. San Antonio was able to seal the win with eight free-throws from Michael Finley in the closing minute of the game.
San Antonio overcame a 48-33 disadvantage on the glass by hitting 54 percent of their shots from the field and scoring 16 points off Utah turnovers.
Both teams will meet again in San Antonio on Tuesday for game two of their best of seven series.
