Monster Weekend for “Shrek the Third”, Sets Three-Day Record

It may be getting easier being green as “Shrek the Third” brought $122 million in its debut weekend to break the three-day record for an animated flick, a record that “Shrek 2” set in 2004.

The Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, Eddie Murphy, Justin Timberlake voiced “Shrek the Third” surpassed the $108 million of its predecessor and easily took the top spot from “Spider-Man 3” which dropped to $28.5 million in its third weekend at U.S. theaters.

Not only did “Shrek the Third” set a new record for openings in the animated genre, it became the third highest opening of all-time, trailing only “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest” ($135.6 million) and “Spider-Man 3” ($151.1 million).

Despite the drop to number two, “Spider-Man 3” continues to bring in the dollars as it bumped its worldwide haul to over $747 million since its opening.
