The United States has said it will resume its emergency medical evacuations for critically injured Haitians, five days after halting the operation due to Florida’s inability to handle the influx of patients.
Initially it was reported that the medical evacuations were halted due to cost but the White House has denied these reports, saying the decision was made due to “logistical issues.” Those issues have seemingly been resolved as White House spokesman Tommy Vietor stated, “Having received assurances that additional capacity exists both here and among our international partners, we determined that we can resume these critical flights.”
As many as 200,000 people died in Haiti’s January 12 earthquake and doctors have warned that number would continue to rise if they were not able to transport many of the injured out of the country.
Immediately following the quake several of the injured suffering spinal injuries and buns were flown to Florida to receive emergency care but the state’s Governor Charlie Crist told President Barack Obama that his healthcare system was “quickly reaching saturation” and needed assistance.
That has apparently been resolved as Vietor assured there were additional states that would be receiving and proving treatment for those injured.
