Richard Hamilton scored 24 points and dished out 7 assists, Rasheed Wallace added 15 points, 12 rebounds and 7 blocks and Tayshaun Prince finished with 8 points, 6 rebounds and 9 assists as the Detroit Pistons held LeBron James to just 10 points and beat the Cleveland Cavaliers 79-76 to take the first game of their Eastern Conference Finals.
Cleveland led 68-65 with 6:54 left in the game but Chauncey Billups completed a three-point play and then buried a three-pointer to give the Pistons a 71-68 advantage. Zydrunas Ilgauskas put the Cavaliers back in front, scoring Cleveland’s next eight points for a one point lead with 2:08 left on the clock.
It was Billups once again who answered for the Pistons as he dropped another three-pointer and Detroit was back up by two with less than two minutes remaining. Cleveland missed their final five shots of the game and Billups sank one of two from the free-throw line with two seconds to seal the game for Detroit.
Both teams will meet again on Thursday in Detroit for game two of their best of seven series.
