Reports out of Houston have indicated that Rick Adelman is set to become the new head coach of the Rockets as early as Wednesday. Adelman is expected to fly into Houston on Tuesday and officially be announced as Jeff Van Gundy’s replacement at a press conference tomorrow.
Van Gundy was released after the Rockets were bounced from the first round of the Western Conference playoffs for the third time in the last four seasons.
While Adelman has experience in the NBA Finals he is yet to win an NBA Championship. Twice he took the Portland Trail Blazers to the Finals but lost to the Detroit Pistons in 1990 and the Chicago Bulls in 1992.
Adelman coached the Golden State Warriors for two seasons but never achieved the same level of success he found in Portland. In 1998 he became the head coach for the Sacramento Kings and despite taking his team to the playoffs in each of his eight seasons he was not resigned after his contract ran out.
With NBA All-Stars Tracy McGrady and Yao Ming the Houston Rockets have yet to make a serious run in the Western Conference playoffs and the firing of Jeff Van Gundy came as no surprise.
