Season Six of ‘American Idol’ Comes Down to Jordin Sparks and Blake Lewis

All that time invested in front of a television and this is what ‘American Idol’ has to offer? Of course it’s not really ‘Idol’s’ fault for Jordin Sparks and Blake Lewis being the last two standing but it’s too difficult to find the phone numbers for all the knuckleheads that have cast votes this year for what has turned out to be a sub-par season of the hit reality show.

If ‘American Idol’ stays true to what it always has been then Jordin Sparks will take the top prize on Wednesday and the show’s producers will be happy. Sparks certainly carries the necessary traits of a breakout singer, namely that she is a good looking young woman whose voice isn’t unbearable. Chances are Sparks would be landing endorsement deals and hitting up the cover of Seventeen magazine the moment she won.

The real problem with Blake Lewis isn’t so much that he isn’t a singer as much as 14-year-old girls grow up. Right now he has grabbed a fan base of these junior high school girls that just won’t be around in a year or two. Ask the New Kids on the Block how their career is going today and you might get a picture as to where Blake is heading. An inability to sing coupled with good looks just isn’t enough for male singers.

While ‘American Idol’ is professed to be a show that bases results on fan voting they are under no obligation to ordain the highest vote getter the next ‘American Idol.’  There is nothing that would prevent them from discarding the votes if they felt it would jeopardize their prospects of making money off of the winner. That’s one reason they never really feared Sanjaya Malakar, they knew they could just boot him if they felt it necessary.

So the truth is ‘American Idol’ was created for contestants like Jordin Sparks. Of course it was also created for singers like Melinda Doolittle and LaKisha Jones but look what good that did them. The one thing ‘American Idol’ isn’t equipped for is a Blake Lewis. Give the guy credit for being original and innovative but make sure you write down his name on a piece of paper somewhere because in two years you’ll be racking your brain trying to remember who Jordin Sparks beat to win season six of ‘American Idol.’
