In a move designed to free up money, NBC News has opted to allow the contract of “Dateline NBC” anchor Stone Phillips to expire in June and won’t resign the popular newsman.
NBC released a statement quoting Phillips as saying “It's been a wonderful 15 years, I'm profoundly appreciative of the many friends and colleagues, past and present, who have been a part of the `Dateline' family. This is a great news division with a bright future. I wish the people of NBC News all the best.”
Rather than replace Phillips NBC will shift greater responsibility onto Ann Curry who currently co-hosts “Dateline NBC.” Curry will have a varied of reporters acting as co-hosts when their stories are being presented on the news show.
Over his time with NBC Phillips has taken the role of substitute anchor for "NBC Nightly News" as well as "Today." Phillips partnered with Jane Pauley from 1992-2003 on ‘Dateline’ and when she left he was the lone anchor until Curry joined the set in 2005.
