COLUMBUS, OHIO. (August 15, 2014). Flowerama Columbus, a family owned
and operated flower shop with four locations, announced that its stores and
customers have raised $932 for the Central Ohio Primary Care Physicians cycling
team’s participation in this year’s Pelotonia bike race, which raises money for
cancer research. One hundred percent of the proceeds go directly to cancer
research. This year’s race has over 7,000 bike riders all raising money for
this important research along with numerous volunteers in the Ohio event.
In commenting on the donations for Pelotonia’s event, Steve
Ozment, Owner of Flowerama Columbus, said, “Our shops have the green arrow tags
that Pelotonia uses for donations and customers were asked if they would like
to support cancer research by paying $1 for each green arrow tag. Then,
customers signed their arrows and put them on display in our shops. Each year,
we work with the same group from Central Ohio Primary Care who participate in
this bike riding weekend.”
Ozment added, “We always get involved in local community
events. It is touching to see the incredible support that our customers also
give in getting behind such an important event. Many of our customers have lost
someone to cancer or know someone who has, so the tags tell a story with friends,
relatives, and heartfelt notes in addition to their donations. This year, the organization
hopes to raise more than $20 million for the Ohio State University
Comprehensive Cancer Center and it’s nice to know that we were a part of that
This is the sixth year for the Pelotonia ride in Columbus.
Each year, the event grows in the number of riders and the donations. In 2013,
6,723 riders raised over $19 million. The money has been used for various
aspects of cancer research, including “idea grants” for research teams, a
student fellowship program, cancer researcher recruitment, specialist and
program retention and a student fellowship program.
