China has issued a stern warning to the United States, saying that if President Barack Obama were to meet with the Dalai Lama later this month the relationship between the two countries would suffer.
According to Communist Party official Zhu Weiqun “If the US leader chooses to meet with the Dalai Lama at this time, it will certainly threaten trust and co-operation between China and the United States.” China considers the Tibetan spiritual leader a separatist and has said any foreign leader meeting with him would be seen as interference in the country’s internal affairs.
Washington has not released any information about a meeting between Obama and the Dalai Lama but it is thought the two would see each other later this month when the Tibetan monk is visiting the U.S. capital.
China’s relationship with the United States is already strained due to recent events that have included a cyber attack on the U.S. search engine Google, the U.S. sale of arms to Taiwan, import and export disagreements and China’s refusal to bend on several issues regarding the climate at the Copenhagen Summit.
