While $43 million is certainly a nice haul it’s not exactly what Disney was hoping for when ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End’ opened across domestic screens on Friday.
Many thought that Johnny Depp and company would surpass the record $59.3 million opening day record set by ‘Spider-Man 3’ set just a few weeks ago but ‘Pirates’ weren’t even close to matching that total. Disney previewed the movie on Thursday night in close to 3,000 theaters prior to its official release and ticket sales for those screenings brought in $14 million.
Had Disney not held the preview screening on Thursday ‘Pirates’ stood a chance to eclipse the ‘Spider-Man 3’ record. It will take a massive Saturday for ‘Pirates’ to still have a chance at the three-day record set by ‘Spider-Man 3,’ an astounding $151.1 million.
