Bosnian Police Raid Conservative Muslim Community, Accuse Villagers of attempting to Destabilize Country

Several hundred Bosnian police descended on the mountain village of Gornja Maoca in the north of the country Monday morning, targeting a conservative Muslim community that has been accused of attempting to destabilize the country.

Those Muslims are said to be followers of Wahhabism, a strictly observant form of Islam that concentrates on purifying Islam and rejecting innovations in the religion.

The raid was carried out after authorities felt the followers posed a threat to the security of Bosnia. According to a spokesman for the prosecutor, “The goal of this operation... is to identify people accused of endangering the territorial integrity of Bosnia-Herzegovina, threatening the constitutional order and promoting national, racial and religious hatred.”
