Cannes Film Festival Awards Top Prize to Romanian Flick

While Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Matt Damon, George Clooney grabbed headlines while attending the Cannes Film Festival it was Romanian director Cristian Mungiu who walked away with the top prize.

Mungiu’s “4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days” won the Palme d’Or as best film, beating out a highly competitive field that included more than 20 films. The film tells the story of an illegal abortion in Communist-era Romania. Mungiu was facing tough competition from Julian Schnabel’s “The Diving Bell and Butterfly,” Joel and Ethan Coen’s “No Country for Old Men,” and James Gray’s “We Own the Night,” starring Joaquin Phoenix and Mark Wahlberg.

Many felt that had Michael Moore entered “Sicko” in the competition he would have taken home his second top prize; he won the award for “Fahrenheit 911” in 2004. “Sicko” is a documentary that examines the U.S. health insurance industry.  Moore opted to submit the film out of category.
