While most movies would be thrilled by a $112.5 million opening weekend “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End” wasn’t supposed to be just another movie. This was to be the final installment of the ‘Pirates’ trilogy and was destined to smash box-office records with astounding bucks at the ticket counter. It didn’t happen. Whether it was the near three-hours it took to watch the flick or the presence of “Shrek the Third” and “Spider-Man 3” at theaters, ‘Pirates’ failed to take in the haul most were expecting.
Not only did Johnny Depp and crew fail to surpass the opening for “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest,” it wasn’t even the highest opening of the month, or the second. Both “Spider-Man 3” and “Shrek the Third” brought in more their opening weekend in the month of May.
Of course it was “Spider-Man 3” that took the box-office record for opening weekend when it arrived earlier this month. The web spinner brought in $151.1 million to overtake the previous opening weekend record set by “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest.” Just last weekend ‘Shrek’ set a new record for openings by an animated film, bringing in $121.6 million.
The consolation prize for ‘Pirates’ will be the record for four-day Memorial Day weekend debut. That mark is currently held by “X-Men: The Last Stand” which brought in $122.9 million last year.
