Spain arrested fifteen North Africans in early morning raids on Monday and charged the men on suspicion of recruiting volunteers for terrorist activities.
The raids netted computer material, jihad propaganda and several cell phones that the men were using to enlist fighters to take up arms in Iraq and other countries. Of the fifteen arrested, thirteen were from Morocco and the other two were Algerian.
Director of the Institute of Studies on Conflict and Humanitarian Action, Jesus Nunez Villaverde stated “The arrests are further evidence that Spain is part of the battlefield of international terrorism.”
In 2004 Madrid was rocked by a series of train bombings that killed 191 people. Spanish police arrested several Islamic terror suspects for the crime, 29 of which are currently on trial for their involvement in those attacks.
