Photizo Group’s 2014 Supplies Forecast shows distinctive growth in select segments of the imaging industry supplies market. The forecast, which provides detailed information on worldwide shipments and revenue, quantifies historical and future trends ranging from 2010 to 2018. Though Photizo identifies some opportunities, the outlook for the majority of the market remains negative.
Worldwide media shipments and revenue are projected to fall. Shipments of laser media and desktop cut-sheet ink jet media will decline at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 1.8 percent through the forecast period. Laser media shipments will decline from 2.3 trillion letter-sized pages in 2013 to 2.1 trillion letter-sized pages in 2018. Likewise, desktop cut-sheet ink jet media shipments will decline from 244.0 billion letter-equivalent pages in 2013 to 200.8 billion letter-equivalent pages in 2018.
Worldwide ink jet cartridge shipments were flat in 2012 and 2013 and are set to decline through the forecasted period. Unit shipments of ink jet cartridges will see a decline of 1.2 percent CAGR, while worldwide revenue will decrease at 2.5 percent CAGR.
The toner market is expected to continue to show slow but steady growth. Worldwide toner cartridge shipments increased from 666 million to 678 million from 2012 to 2013. Worldwide revenue followed suit with growth from $75 billion to $78 billion. Although worldwide shipments are expected to become flat through 2017, revenue is expected to grow by 1.4 percent CAGR due to the ongoing shift from monochrome to color printing.
While the overall forecast shows a negative growth pattern that is consistent with previous years, indications of growth may spur optimism in the industry.
Ann Priede, Photizo Group Services and Publications Vice President, states, “As the global imaging market copes with an overall downturn in printed pages, pockets of opportunity remain in the supplies market, including toner cartridges for color laser printers and MFPs and single-color ink cartridges for business ink jet devices.”
In addition, market share for third party supplies companies is expected to increase.
Larry Jamieson, Photizo Group Practice Director, indicates, “Despite increased empties collection and recycling efforts by manufacturers, we expect third-party remanufacturers to increase their share of the toner cartridge aftermarket through slight growth in the share of refill DIY, retail, and CISS ink cartridges.”
