Continental Airlines Inc., the fourth-largest U.S. carrier, advanced in New York’s trading after reporting that Januarys revenue from each seat flown a mile was better than the company’s prior anticipation for the previous month.

Unit revenue fell in a range of 2.5 percent to 3.5 percent from the previous year, the Houston-Based airline said late yesterday. The drop was narrower than Continental’s January 21st projection for a 4% unit revenue decline on its main jet operations.

William Greene, an analyst for Morgan Stanley said, “This beat reaffirmed our view and may also renew investor enthusiasm in the near term.” He also called the results a “positive surprise versus expectations.”

Continental climbed 60 cents, or 3.1 percent, to $19.89 at 9:42 a.m. in New York Stock Exchange composite trading. A gain today would be the first two-day advance for the shares since Jan. 13-14.
