Speaking from Washington, President Bush stated ““I promise this to the people of Darfur: The United States will not avert our eyes from a crisis that challenges the conscience of the world,” and with that ordered new economic sanctions aimed at pressuring the Sudanese government to end the atrocities in the Darfur region.
After four-years more than 200,000 people have been killed in Darfur, a figure that Bush equated to systematic killing stating, “For too long the people of Darfur have suffered at the hands of a government that is complicit in the bombing, murder and rape of innocent civilians. My administration has called these actions by their rightful name: genocide.”
Sudan’s oil industry and three individuals are targeted for the new sanctions in hopes that President Omar al-Bashir will respond with action to stop the bloodshed in Darfur.
Bush emphasized “The world has a responsibility to put an end to it.”
