Sri Lanka Authorities Holding 37 People in Alleged Plot to Assassinate President Mahinda Rajapaksa

Sri Lanka authorities have arrested 37 people and have charged them with plotting to assassinate President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

The arrests, which involved a number of military officers who have stood in opposition of Rajapaksa’s leadership, come one week after the president won reelection in a volatile race in which he was accused of fraud.

Opposition leaders have denied any plot to overthrow Rajapaksa and have said the arrests were carried out as punishment for standing in defiance of his office. The majority of those arrested were detained following a raid on the office of defeated presidential candidate Gen. Sarath Fonseka, the same candidate who accused Rajapaksa of rigging the recent election.

While Fonseka challenged the results of the presidential race the Election Commission has stood by the results.
