The controversy surrounding the leadership abilities of Nigerian President Umaru Yar’Adua continues to gain traction as more than a dozen owners of newspapers and media organizations have demanded the leader hand over power to Vice-President Goodluck Jonathan within seven days or resign.
Yar’Adua has been hospitalized in Saudi Arabia since November, suffering from a heart condition that has left him bedridden. Debate over his ability to effectively carry out his duties as president has led to a number of court cases yet Nigeria’s highest court recently ruled he did not need to transfer power to an interim leader while away.
The Cabinet of Yar’Adua has declared him fit to lead and have refused to back any calls for the president to stand down but the calls continue to get louder. On Wednesday media owners demanded Yar’Adua meet their demands or face impeachment, saying the country faced the potential for a power vacuum due to his extended absence.
